We are living in extraordinary times and nobody seems to notice. We are a generation of people who will see the unraveling of our good society. The greed in our mass media overwhelms any sense of decency it once had. There are too many channels and too much competition for eyeballs to allow time for ethics. If it bleeds it leads. Only after an idea creates interest and generates ratings and money does it begin to matter. Our media captivates our people but they don’t care about the people watching. The media only cares about getting the peoples money.
The media is a mess because nobody is in charge. It has become a bureaucracy only interested in ratings. The simple way to get ratings is to broadcast something that is bad. Because people like watching other people fail. People like watching celebrities fail. The easiest way to get on reality TV is to fail. The easiest way to get views on your video is to fail. We watch reality shows so we can laugh at people when they fail. We are generation fail.
The media tells us that we should stand up against “bullies” but neglects to mention that they, the media, is the biggest bully of them all. We need bullies. Bullies are an important part of life. Bullies prepare us for the harsh reality that not everybody is going to be nice to you all the time. If we eliminate bullies from schools, then who will we have prepared to defend us in twenty years? We will send our Navy Seals to war not as honed fighting machines but more like the cast of Revenge Of The Nerds. The terrorists will attack, and then what? We will send our passive army overseas and have them shout… “Stop that!! Please??”
We are turning into a generation of wimps. I think we should stomp on these wimps and give them wedgies. And then take away their Frisbee and throw dirt in their faces.
Life is a popularity contest. It’s too bad they didn’t teach us in high school that for the rest of our lives people behave as if they are in high school. So many people end up stuck in this social quagmire. So what a lot of people in school were bullies? Guess what, when you leave school, a lot of those people are bullies as well. We need to prepare our children for the real world.
And always remember you don’t have to stay friends with the same people you hung out with in high school for the rest of your life, especially if they are assholes.
Now with social media and the Internet and cell phones it is impossible to get away from these pricks. There was a time, when you left school or moved to a new city you would never have to talk to those people again. The Internet allows us to be haunted by the same negative people from our past for the rest of our lives. We are now easily followed by people that before we would have left in the dust. Saying goodbye is a thing of the past. Social media ruined that. Now every asshole you have ever known will be poking their noses into your life until the day you die.
There was something romantic about saying goodbye forever. That romance is dead.
Maybe I’m just having a bad day?
